John was born in Derbyshire in 1940. He joined the Royal Marines Band Service as a band boy in 1954, his principle instrumnet being French Horn. He served at home, abroad and at sea in the various rank structures and retired as a SNCO in 1982.
He has a wide experience of conducting brass bands, firstly in the West Country and Portsmouth before moving to Hove in 1987. He was Musical Director of the Brighton Band, The Oxted Band and before joining Chichester City Band in 1997, Mid Sussex Brass.
Under John’s direction the band have qualified for promotion from third, through second to first section in the National and Southern Counties sphere of contesting.
John, together with the players, have enjoyed a fruitful musical four years and this certainly shows itself in all aspects in the performance of concerts and the many varied engagements the band undertakes.
